The 5th Pillar of Islam: Performing Hajj

Assalaamu’alaikum brothers and sisters! As many of you may already know, our religion of Islam is comprised of 5 Pillars; The Shahadah, Our Salah, Paying Zakat, Fasting during Ramadan, and Performing The Hajj. Insha’Allah we will be explaining about the 5th Pillar of Islam today, and that is performing the Hajj. I am currently in the resarching and documenting phase and will update this section with my overview of what Allah (swt) has decreed upon us as well as what our beloved Prophet Muhammad (saaw) has mentioned about performing the Hajj. For now, please enjoy this documentation I have obtained from Wikipedia.com.

The Hajj is a pilgrimage to Mecca. It is currently the largest annual pilgrimage in the world, and is a moral obligation that must be carried out at least once in their lifetime by every able-bodied Muslim who can afford to do so. The Hajj is a demonstration of the solidarity of the Muslim people, and their submission to Allah (swt). The pilgrimage occurs from the 7th to 13th day of Dhu al-Hijjah, the 12th month of the Islamic calendar. Because the Islamic calendar is a lunar calendar, eleven days shorter than the Gregorian calendar used in the Western world, the Gregorian date of the Hajj changes from year to year. In 2007, the Hajj was from December 17–21; in 2008 from December 6–10, and in 2009 will be November 25–29. Ihram is the name given to the special state in which Muslims live whilst on the pilgrimage.

The Hajj is associated with the life of Islamic Prophet Muhammad (saaw) from the 7th century, but the ritual of pilgrimage to Mecca is considered by Muslims to stretch back thousands of years to the time of Prophet Ibrahim (saaw) . Pilgrims join processions of hundreds of thousands of people, who simultaneously converge on Mecca for the week of the Hajj, and perform a series of rituals: Each person walks counter-clockwise seven times about the Ka’bah, the cube-shaped building which acts as the Muslim direction of prayer; kisses the Black Stone in the corner of the Kaaba; runs back and forth between the hills of Al-Safa and Al-Marwah; drinks from the Zamzam Well; goes to the plains of Mount Arafat to stand in vigil; and throws stones in a ritual Stoning of the Devil. The pilgrims then shave their heads, perform a ritual of animal sacrifice, and celebrate the three day global festival of Eid al-Adha.

As of 2008, about three million pilgrims participate in this annual pilgrimage.Crowd-control techniques have become critical, and because of the large numbers of people, many of the rituals have become more stylized. It is not necessary to kiss the Black Stone, but merely to point at it on each circuit around the Kaaba. Throwing pebbles was done at large pillars, which for safety reasons in 2004 were changed to long walls with catch basins below to catch the stones. The slaughter of an animal can be done either personally, or by appointing someone else to do it, and so forth.[8] But even with the crowd control techniques, there are still many incidents during the Hajj, as pilgrims are trampled in a crush, or ramps collapse under the weight of the many visitors, causing hundreds of deaths. The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia‘s Ministry of Hajj has a website, with the message, “Be peaceful, orderly and kind. No crushing.”

Pilgrims can also go to Mecca to perform the rituals at other times of the year. This is sometimes called the “lesser pilgrimage”, or Umrah. However, even if they perform the Umrah, they are still obligated to perform the Hajj at some other point in their lifetimes if they have the means to do so.

Hajji Hamith has gone to great lengths to obtain some excellent video documentaries explaining the process and origination of the Hajj, as well as the proper way to perform this obligatory duty on able-bodied muslims. Please enjoy the videos below, and please let me know (phally@todaychamkhmerislam.com) if there are any inconsistencies or comments you may want to discuss. Insha’Allah this will benefit anybody who wants to learn more about an important part of our religion; Wassalamu’alaikum my brothers and sister!

The second pillar of Islam – Salah

As sala’amu alaikum waramatuAllahi barakatuh brothers and sisters! Thank you for visiting this page and for your interest in what might be the most important pillar of Islam; salah. Salah is an extremely important subject when it comes to being a Muslim. We will go as far as to say that those who do not offer salah, with the exception of those who are truly unable to, are not Muslims. Why you ask? The answer is simple; Allah (swt) has commanded us in The Qur’an to bow down and prostrate to Him 5 times a day;

Surah 2 – Al-Baqara (MADINA) : Verse 238
Guard strictly your (habit of) prayers Especially the middle prayer, and stand before Allah in a devout (frame of mind).

Surah 2 – Al-Baqara (MADINA) : Verse 238
Be guardians of your prayers, and of the midmost prayer, and stand up with devotion to Allah.

Surah 37 – As-Saaffat (MAKKA) : Verse 165
Verily, we (angels), we stand in rows (for the prayers as you Muslims stand in rows for your prayers);

If you have read The Holy Qur’an, many of you will find that there is no description of how to prostrate and offer salah to Our Lord, Allah (swt). This is where the Sunnah of The Prophet Muhammad (saws) comes into play. Our beloved Prophet (saws) teaches us how to properly take wudhu (aka ablution) to prepare to offer salah, and teaches us how to offer salah (how many ru’kats, how many prayers a day, why so many, etc.). So as many of you can see my dear brothers and sisters, our obligatory as well as Nawafil (optional) prayers are very important. It is our way of communicating directly with our Creator, our Lord Allah (swt). Here is a beautiful hadith authenticating the previous statements:

Bukhari :: Book 1 :: Volume 2 :: Hadith 47

Narrated Abu Huraira:

One day while the Prophet was sitting in the company of some people, (The angel) Gabriel came and asked, “What is faith?” Allah’s Apostle replied, ‘Faith is to believe in Allah, His angels, (the) meeting with Him, His Apostles, and to believe in Resurrection.” Then he further asked, “What is Islam?” Allah’s Apostle replied, “To worship Allah Alone and none else, to offer prayers perfectly to pay the compulsory charity (Zakat) and to observe fasts during the month of Ramadan.” Then he further asked, “What is Ihsan (perfection)?” Allah’s Apostle replied, “To worship Allah as if you see Him, and if you cannot achieve this state of devotion then you must consider that He is looking at you.” Then he further asked, “When will the Hour be established?” Allah’s Apostle replied, “The answerer has no better knowledge than the questioner. But I will inform you about its portents.

1. When a slave (lady) gives birth to her master.

2. When the shepherds of black camels start boasting and competing with others in the construction of higher buildings. And the Hour is one of five things which nobody knows except Allah.

The Prophet then recited: “Verily, with Allah (Alone) is the knowledge of the Hour–.” (31. 34) Then that man (Gabriel) left and the Prophet asked his companions to call him back, but they could not see him. Then the Prophet said, “That was Gabriel who came to teach the people their religion.” Abu ‘Abdullah said: He (the Prophet) considered all that as a part of faith.

That is why we have decided to offer our video rendition of one of the most important pillars of Islam; Salah. The videos below describe and explain, in the Cambodian language of Khmer, just how important it is to offer salah and the proper way of doing it, inshaAllah. Please be mindful and if there are any discrepancies that you can point out, please do not hesitate to contact us. We are here to help spread the word of Islam and offer Da’wah for the sake of our Creator alone, so if we’re not doing some correctly we must rectify and acknowledge our mistake as well as fix it immediately. Let’s join together brothers and sisters and unite in offering salah to Allah (swt). Exalted is He, and He deserves nothing less than the best we have to offer our Lord.

Please enjoy the videos below my brothers and sisters! Insha’Allah it will be of some use to those of us who question the practice of their religion. Assalamu’alaikum warama’tuAllahi wa barakatuh!
